Raku
Project Type
Raku Firing
Date
April 2023
Raku firing is a ancient Japanese method of firing. Bisque fired pieces are put into a kiln that is then fired to around 1000° C (1830°F). Once the kiln reaches the desired temperature, the pieces are removed while they are red hot (using proper safety equipment). The pieces are then rapidly cooled, often using combustible material such as paper, sawdust, horse hair, straw and dried leaves, and finally, quenched in water, creating beautiful colors and patterns.
Please note - Raku fired pieces are not food safe due to the firing process.
